So this is my way to help out many of you with some helpful little tips.  Some may seem basic, but it helps to see a video or two along the way.  So let’s start simple.

1.)  We generally use a Lambskin Roller Cover half inch.  This type of roller cover cleans easier and holds a good amount of paint for each pass.

2.)  We really like Sherwin Williams paints for our Interiors.  Our two main products are Cashmere and Duration Home.

Cashmere gives a nice finish and covers really well.  Cashmere does have some washability, but limited.

Duration Home is more expensive, but it is great for families with children and bathrooms.

First, most homeowners will attempt to remove the wallpaper on there own.  Where most of the problems come into play is that the wallpaper is installed on the sheetrock without any sizing or primer underneath.  This generally results in the sheetrock being damaged and repair work needing to be done.  We generally are the next phone call that is made to help put things back to normal.

So what kind of tips can we offer?  When you make the decision to remove your wallpaper try and just find a small corner and pull.  If the WallPaper comes off in little strips then this will be your first sign of difficulty that will come.  So let’s walk through what process we use.

TOP 10 STEPS TO REMOVE WALLPAPER LIKE A PRO:

1)  Grab a bunch of old towels or bedsheets and roll them up into a roll and place them along the base of the wall.  The process of removing wallpaper generally requires a lot of water and it is best to have something down to absorb the water.

2.)  Try and remove the TOP layer of wallpaper DRY first.  If you can get decent strips then stay with that tactic.  NOT all wallpaper removes the same way, so start from the bottom and try and pull up and then try from the top and go down.  DO NOT start in the middle of the wall, that generally will produce smaller pieces.

3.)  So you have determined you need to use a chemical.  We use 2 different products primarily.  Diff and Fast.  The Key to using both of these is HOT HOT water.  We use a small pump sprayer and spray from the top down in back and forth motions.  IMPORTANT: Do NOT use a paper tiger to make little holes.  It is not necessary AND it ads all kinds of work for repairs later.  Not to mention it causes the paper to come off in small little pieces.

KEY:  Soak down an area really good and wait!  Do not let wall dry keep soaking it for 15 minutes! THEN attempt to strip.  This is the one thing so many people don’t do.  I realize you want to jump in, but letting the solution soak in the wallpaper is key.  Remember not to allow the section to dry.

4.)  Again start stripping from top down or bottom up.  Sometimes pulling from left to right works too.  You have to determine which technique is working.  Focus on top layer only for now.

5.)  Now the top layer is off and it’s time for the backing to be removed.  Again soak the wall and use a wide putty knife to push off the backing.  Be careful not to take off any layers of sheetrock.

6.)  Now you have all layers removed and have some sheetrock damage, don’t worry about that for now.  Focus on cleaning the walls.  This is where another big mistake comes for homeowners.  The walls look clean.  So soak the wall again with same solution and use same knife to scrape wall to remove any remaining glue.  You can use a sponge and solution, but a putty knife works better in my opinion.

7.)  Now you can focus on repairing the Sheetrock damage.  You will need to let the walls dry and sand lightly sand them to smooth out any extra glue remaining.  Then use a Low Oder Oil Primer to primer the walls.  WHY?  Well if you missed any glue and attempt to paint the paint will crackle AND any damaged wallpaper areas will be sealed before repairing.

8.)  Repair the walls by using a sheetrock mud.  Apply a skim coat over damaged areas.  Let dry completly light sand and repeat until the area is smooth.  This will cause some dust so try and put plastic up in doorways to keep dust in room you are working in.

9.)  When areas are repaired you make primer those areas with the same Low Oder Oil Primer and let dry.

10.)  You are now ready to paint.  Always paint 2 coats over these walls.  You should have a good clean finish with no worries of crackle.

You ask “Todd is this really a major concern?”  My answer is yes and no.   Although some areas that have problems are superficial there are many areas that if left unchecked could really cause you headaches in the Spring.

What are those areas?  Windows and Soffits.  If a window sill has developed into a problem area and allows water to leak down into the wall itself your studs can be affected and not to mention the possible developement of mold.

Soffits provide another area of problem.  Most of the time a homeowner doesn’t realize that a gutter might be plugged and allowing water to build up and rot the facia board behind the gutter.  When this happens the water leaks into the soffit and starts the wood rot process.  In severve areas the water continues in and starts to cause problems in ceilings inside of your home.

Before we talk about the solutions in a later article let me give you the best piece of advice possible.

Have your home inspected!  It’s FREE.  Pick up the phone and call us and say ” Todd we were wanting a FREE inspection before things get to bad this Winter. “  I would love to help.  I have built Paint Dynamics on a passion to help homeowners and educate them about potential problem areas.

If we find something it’s a lot cheaper now to fix it then when the Studs are rotted.  If we don’t find anything you have peace of mind knowing your home is in good shape.  It’s really a simple sonlution.
